From 2011 to 2018 Julia worked in commercial archaeology as an archaeozoological specialist for Archaeological Solutions Ltd in Bury St Edmunds working on a variety of animal bone and marine shell assemblages as well as occasional worked bone and stray human bone assemblages. Prior to this she worked at the University of Bradford for the North Atlantic Research Unit (NARU), principally working on material from the site of Old Scatness in Shetland. During this time, she also studied part time for her PhD on changes in the size and shape of domestic mammals which she completed in 2010. During her time at the University of Bradford Julia also took on a number of other animal bone contracts studying animal bones from the sites of Binchester, County Durham, Scotch Street in Carlisle and Broxmouth, East Lothian, she also undertook a variety of teaching duties and archaeological fieldwork.
